Charlmont 149 --Caption title. Width of road: 47 ft. Traveled way: width 27 ft., grade 0 ft. per 100. Surface: crowned 6 in., uneven, rather soft, ruts 16 in. deep material: loam and gravel, soft sides: right, slopes up from gutter, left, grass bank slopes up to sidewalk 1 ft. gutters: right, 8 in. deep, left, 10 in. deep sidewalks: right, none, left, 5 ft wide, 1 ft. above gutter. Remarks: Team in foreground weighs loaded 15300 lbs., has 4 in. tires and is drawn by 4 horses. Bottom of rut is hard as stone. Photograph accompanies the Report of the Commission to Improve the Highways of the Commonwealth, 1893.
